(8940) Hotel de France, CHATEAUROUX. Indre. France. GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}I/Crn.8.4.25. To: "Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}" From: G.W.Hancock. Re your letter of the 6th inst., we know that it is perfectly essential for reports to be sent in regular- ly day by day. We cannot understand your letter, as reports have left here regularly since the 5th inst. We did not send off a report on Saturday the 4th inst., as it was too late for the last post on our arrival. We have received your wires, reading : - MAKE OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS AT VARIOUS MAXIMUM SPEEDS - HIVES PULL OUT SPRING OF LOW PRESSURE VALVE TO INCREASE OIL PRESSURE HIVES. The oil consumption tests had not been forgotten, but we have been pressed for time having to apply for identi- fication papers, etc. etc. Also, we wished to make oil con- sumption tests when it was possible to take oil temperatures at the same time. We have already reported on the failure of the oil pipe for these tests. Re cut-out, I was not aware that you had used a hammer on this cut-out, on your run down to London. We have had no trouble whatsoever with the cut-out here, and it is working perfectly. We have carried out two tests on oil consumptions. These tests have been done on a course of 60 miles approximate- ly. To get oil consumptions as correct as possible, we have drained the engine of oil before tests and after. For our tests we have put six pints of oil into the engine. FIRST TEST - 60 m.p.h. Consumption of oil works out at 145.3 m.p.g. Temperature of oil - 68°C. Water temperature - 80°C. SECOND TEST - 50 m.p.h. Consumption of oil works out at 356.8 m.p.g. Temperature of oil - 68° to 70°C. Water temperature - 80°C. Air temperatures were not taken, as it is impossible to get a suitable thermometer here. If you wish these tempera- tures, we can obtain a thermometer from Paris depot. Further tests are being carried out. | ||
