ORMSBY, M.I.MECH.E. 40, Grosvenor Gardens, London, S.W.1. 30th.January 1931. My dear Hives, I am afraid you will think I am always sending you inventions, but the gear described below is more an affair of the future than the Humfrey-Sandberg Clutch. As you may know this Company, which now controls the Humfrey-Sandberg patents, also controls patents for a mechanical infinitely variable inertia gear. The development of this gear has arisen out of the association that this Company's predecessors had with Constantinesco. But the gear itself, whilst of the inertia type, is fundamentally different from the Constantinesco gear and has the characteristic that at any car speed it can be locked up solid, giving direct drive; so that in a motor car the variable speed gear would only be in operation during such periods as an indirect gear would be used in an orthodox car. This gear has now reached a stage when it is ripe for practical development - a good deal of road experience has been obtained and the mechanism shows promise. Our Director, Mr. Duff, is responsible for the technical development and I would very much like you to see him when he is in the Midlands during the next week or so and let him tell you a little about the gear. Perhaps you will let me know if it would interest you to hear about this as I would not want you to waste your time. Yours sincerely, [Signature] E.Hives, Esq., Rolls-Royce, Ltd., DERBY. | ||
