Handwritten top section: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X7960 S/W. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}..from PN.{Mr Northey} Copy to SC. Papers handed by MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} & Bys Relu by H... XJ 12-SJ Underlined: Overseas Propaganda 'Phantom II'. I left this car at the Works last week in order that you might have an opportunity on your return, of examining the whole affair, with a view to realising what happens to such a car when taken new, on to 10,000 miles of rough touring, such as this car has been through. I am also enclosing a memo HO7/EBN.21.6.30. which please return, giving you a report of this car. We feel that the position is not at all satisfactory, if we have to realise that a costly Rolls-Royce complete car has to get into this sort of condition as a result of running 10,000 when touring on rough roads on the Continent. we may be able to conclude that however much information we may be able to gain resulting from our standard 10,000 mile tests from Chateauroux, we are not able to form any opinion as to what may become of coachwork unless run over altogether worse roads than those normally used for our tests. We shall be glad to have your remarks after your inspection of this car, and then it should be returned to us in order that it may be put into running condition. Meanwhile the engine is being decarbonised at Derby, and other small jobs attended to. PN.{Mr Northey} md Stamp: RECEIVED 1 JUL 1930 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
