Phantom II & 25/30 HP. Exhaust Silencers.

In reply to memo. BY.12/G.25.8.36, this is the first intimation we have had of any Staybright parts breaking down in service, and to substitute Aluminized mild steel for it with the object of getting a longer life we should consider very much of an experiment.

The reason we have standardised Aluminized mild steel parts on the Bentley chassis is that we consider it will give us as good a life as Staybright at approximately one sixth of the cost.

With regard to the rear silencer which is not made in Staybright, we are at the moment in touch with Webb Treatments Ltd., and have already sent them a completely built 25/30 HP. rear silencer, and a rear silencer shell, for treatment by their anti-rust process, with a view to overcoming the present trouble of corrosion due to water condensing inside the silencer.

We intend to run an exhaust system on our next 25/30 HP. 10,000 miles test, made up as follows. Downtake pipe, front silencer and intermediate pipe in mild steel, "Aluminized"; rear silencer and tail pipe treated by the Webb process inside and out.

Really, in the case of the Phantom II, the only method of trying out improvements is to put them on a customer's car where the trouble has already been experienced, and we think we should do this.
