COMPLAINT CASE. ============== Re: CHASSIS B.106.HK{Col. T. Harker - Sales} - Baron Guy de ROTHSCHILD (Total mileage: approx. 26.380) Sr. has asked me to write to you concerning the following: The above owner, who is very important, has seriously complained to Sr. concerning the oil consumption of his car which, he says, still uses 1 litre per 100 Kms., despite the fact that we have attended to it. The following work has been carried out by us to the engine, in the past: 4.2.37 at 6405 miles, we carried out modification "B", viz. removed lower half of crankcase and attended to the sinkage of the main bearings by fitting a set of new liners and stepping them as necessary. The liners fitted were in RR.56. We also fitted a set of this type of liner to the connecting rods. 6.1.38, at 20789 miles, the owner sent the car to us so that we should attend to his complaint of excessive oil consumption, plus an R.20 engine clean which he paid for. As we found the oil flow to be excessive past the main bearings, we decided to carry out the following: Modification "C": Dismantled engine, drilled crankshaft. Fitted a set of new main bearings (whitemetal to rear). Blocked up the holes in the connecting rods and fitted 6 high pressure scraper rings. Since carrying out the above, the car has covered about 5600 miles and, as per owner's statement, the oil consumption is again excessive. The owner has informed Sr. that, if we cannot put the matter right, he will sell the car and purchase a HOTCHKISS. Sr. says that, under the circumstances, the best thing for us to do will be to fit a new cylinder block complete with the latest type aerolite pistons (smaller skirt clearances) to EB.3151, with latest type piston rings which should be specially prepared by the Works. However, in this connection, we quote hereunder the first two paragraphs of your Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}3/R.2.113 re "Bentley Pistons": "If in service it is necessary to fit new pistons "for any reason, the new pistons should be iden- "tical in type and to the same drawing number as "the ones produced with the particular engine at "the Works.
