Investigating permanent cures for squeaking brakes, including consultations with Ferodo and testing dampers.

No. REF: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/LG17.4.25. all forms of bedding and although rebedding the brakes will always get rid of squeaks for a time, the cure is not permanent. We have consulted Messrs. Ferodo on the question of squeaking brakes and they do not know of any permanent cure. In a number of cases they have recommended dampers on the brake drums. They have had difficulty with squeaking on all sorts of brakes used in mines etc. They are of the opinion that reducing the pressure per unit area will reduce the squeaks. This, however, is not confirmed by our experience on a car because we are running a 20 HP. car with the wider brake shoes on the foot brake - these brakes still squeak objectionably. It is difficult to say whether they may not be slightly better than standard. We also get squeaking with quite light pressures on the foot brake pedal. The present dampers fitted to the 20 HP. cars are very efficient. They effectively damp out a considerable amount of squeaking; without them the squeaking would be impossible. For their weight they are the most efficient dampers we have tested. The damping schemes which the Expl: Dept: have tried have always been with the object of reducing the troubles on cars already in customers hands which are being complained of by the owners.
