Eccentric Toggle Adjustment Rear Brakes.

This device has now run a number of miles on 22-EX. From the adjustment point of view, i.e. getting the four notches required with the minimum of effort, we are perfectly satisfied. The fitters however, are not very enthusiastic about the arrangement for either bedding brakes initially or re-lining brake shoes at Depots.

(a) Their main objection to the scheme is that it makes the finest adjustment they can get on the toggle two complete turns, instead of a single turn at present available, and this fact alone they assert would double the amount of time required to bed a set of brake shoes.

(b) Furthermore, they seem to think that the eccentric adjustment would cause errors to be made by outside Depots, but we hardly think that this is a very serious complaint and it should be possible to overcome it by means of a Depot Sheet.

For the time being, in view of (a) we wonder whether an arrangement could be provided on the thicker brake shoe toggle to prevent the toggle being unscrewed more than the equivalent of four notches once the brake has been bedded in the first place.

The most dangerous feature, to our mind, of allowing the toggles to be adjusted without some such limit is that some-one will inevitably continue to set out the brake shoes until the rivets come in contact with the drum, melt their brake shoes in a long down hill run and subsequently crash due to having no retarding force left.

With regard to the rivets with smaller heads, these are not satisfactory with the thicker lining and we think that we can afford to retain our original size.
