We recently took Peregrine III car with 2 passengers and luggage around a number of the most severe hills we know of. These included Porlock, Lynton and Beggar's Roost in Devon, and Bwlch-y-Groes North Wales. The braces had been arranged to give very good efficiency with standard servo by means of the leverages given in the attached Report. Ms/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} 2799A. 9.12.32. One object of the test was to see whether the pedal travel would increase too rapidly. This did not occur. The only trouble experienced was that after descending Porlock it was found that the expansion of the front brake shoes had taken up the initial .015 clearance given at the brace and centre. The shoes, however, released themselves on being allowed to cool down. The forged steel brace shoe which you have designed will over come this trouble. The car performed exceedingly well, bottom gear only being needed on two hills, where the gradient reached approx. 1 in 3 1/2. A standing start was made on a 1 in 4 gradient without any clutch trouble. Some very rough ground was negotiated and no trouble was experienced from lack of ground clearance. We blew an exhaust manifold joint. Slightly larger studs retaining the manifold would probably obviate the trouble. We estimate that the cooling of the car is satisfactory. At no time was there any trouble with petrol feed. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rs.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary} | ||
