re. 20 H.P. Demonstration Car.
RECEIVED FEB 5 1923
Replying to your PN {Mr Northey} 2/DN31.1.23, we would deal with the points mentioned as follows:-
DYNAMO RATTLES.
This is a feature which certainly has given trouble on test, and I feel that the engines are somewhat near this defect.
The only quick way in which something can be done to overcome this trouble, is to increase the braking effect on the dynamo drive. This can no doubt be done satisfactorily by Evans at Lillie Hall, and if he does not understand how to do/this, will he please enquire from me on the 'phone.
As a matter of fact, an improvement in the design of the spring drive for the engine gears has recently been effected so as to reduce the amount of wear which takes place, causing this dynamo rattle to be accentuated, and it may be advisable for this car to be rigged up with this improvement.
I certainly think, however, in order that this may receive proper investigation, we should, as soon as ever possible, take the opportunity of this car being brought to the Works, so that it can be thoroughly examined, it being a case, I take it, where the car was once satisfactory, and has now developed bad in this respect. We are anxious to demonstrate that the various features of the engine are made to drawing or otherwise, whether there is likely to be a general trouble, and also what can be done in the way of manufacture, inspection or design to overcome this trouble definitely.
Do you find that this trouble exists with other Trials Cars, and do you find that the trouble develops after the engine has been running for some time?
BRAKES SQUEAKING.
This is also a point which we shall have to investigate. I take it that this trouble has developed after the car has been in use for some time. I should like to examine these brakes carefully, as this is a job which should also receive our attention to ascertain whether it is a question of manufacture or design.
Do you find this is a common trouble, or is it specially faulty on this car?
CONTINUED.
