Design As regards eccentrically engaged reverse I think that if Works can arrange to cut the teeth of the 1st. speed wheel and pinion with rounded tops, thus - i.e. the ordinary involute tooth to which is added an extra addendum to form a semi-circular to - we can make a reverse pinion which is quite easy to engage, and perhaps we can find fairly simple mechanism to operate. The sketched enclosed shew my best scheme. I am not suggesting that it is very good, and I hope you can take either something from it, or find a better one. I should ask Derby about the teeth and whether there is very much difference in the ease of engagement of either type. The broad pinion would have a hardened bore ground and lapped smooth, a floating bush of the Kelmet type might be used, and the hardened pin might be nitro-hardened, and therefore extra hard and less liable to seize. Probably the pin would be hollow for entrance of oil or for central bolt to hold on the loose eccentric, or the pin could be plain with 2 loose eccentrics. I am not sure that my pinion is the best side of the layshaft. The connecting rod is shewn hollow with one solid end window and slot at left hand end, rod between the two balls, and generally a piece of thin tube with bronze pads driven in each end. Naturally it must be arranged to gear with the 1st. pinion which is running before it gears with the wheel. Almost all the points are so well known to us all that I need not repeat. Try over all the combinations of reverse and application and let me know which you prefer. I have some other work to do so I must not spend more on this. FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS. - URGENT.
