TO R.{Sir Henry Royce} FROM E/DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} SECRET. E2/M29. 1. 24. Copy to - CJ. RG.{Mr Rowledge} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BT.{Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer} (text is crossed out) E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. x9940 x9320 (text is crossed out) 49310 x9660 re. ALTERATIONS TO GEARBOX & ENGINE FOR 4 WHEEL BRAKES. We had reached the same conclusion at Wittering as yourself, that it was necessary to scrap the gearbox casting, and drive a slow speed servo from the third motion shaft as per one of your earlier schemes. We had made a rough scheme showing the EAC.4. servo motor on the 40/50 box, and found that it was necessary to move the dynamo as you concluded. The servo was driven by a 7 to 1 worm in the rear compartment of the box through a 3 to 1 spur reduction. This latter was used to step the servo forward. As regards the Lucas dynamo this will go in, being an eccentric machine, in the place now occupied by the magneto, and the latter can be pushed further to the rear, except on P. & R.{Sir Henry Royce} series, where the valve tappet rocker pockets are all alike, and some machining of the crankcase appears necessary. As instructed all possible efforts are now directed on EAC.4. box and servo. E/DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
