Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} X1113 Mxl/T6.7.36 Report from GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} on Customers complaints. (1) We agree that this is a troublesome item and we pointed out this trouble at the commencement of the 25/30HP. We take every possible care and satisfy ourselves that these are free when the chassis leave here but it is very easy to distort the carburetter and bind the choke valve unless extreme care is used in tightening up the bolt holding the connection of the air silencer. (2) This is a trouble we take every precaution to see that the engine is clean and engine oil is changed twice during test. (3) On final inspection of the chassis prior to leaving the Works each chassis is pulled down to normal buffer clearance and brake movement is checked. With regard to GUL-19 our records show that the brake movement in this condition was 1" measured on the operating lever of the rear axle. (4,6) (& 7) We agree that the oil leak from the crankcase filler is a troublesome feature. We have made continual complaints about this and consider it is a question of design rather than workmanship. Our experience is that the leak comes from between the fixing for the cap which is a pressing and the filler which is a casting. In this connection there has been a recent modification and on chassis at present going through test the filler cap makes a joint direct on to the face of the casting. This is a distinct improvement. We have not found that the leak from the filler is of such magnitude that it has any appreciable effect on oil consumption. We made a special test of this point. [Signature] | ||
