Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} JUN 28 1927 RECEIVED (Stamp) 7457 (Handwritten) BY/HEB{H. Biraben} (Struck through) C.BY/HM.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} c.Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY2/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 23.6.27. 20 HP.CHASSIS. X In order to overcome low speed wobbles, also at the same time a clicking noise in the rear end of the side steering tube, resulting from one pad not following the ball, and breaking the oil film, The Experimental Dept. are asking us to put on at the earliest possible moment two modifications - 1. Apply the cross steering set-up ball scheme, with the minimum of slack, merely .010, to check that the springs are operating, similar to that on the cross steering tube, to the front end of the side steering tube. 2. Modify the rear end of the side steering tube in accordance with N.Scheme 2417. Will BY/HM.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} obtain the details for this as soon as they are available, from BY/HEB{H. Biraben}, and put them through as an urgent job which must be done without waiting for tools, and ask when they can be brought on. The Experimental Dept. are of the opinion that this later modification is of sufficient importance, owing to the relation of the low speed wobbles, to justify a certain amount of scrap. In any case, it must be brought in for "L" Series. If the Works will tell us what it will cost to scrap the material for the last 100 in "K" we will put this up to SJ. and obtain his consent or otherwise. The above would have re-acted upon the modification of the side steering tubes which was put in hand in the first place on account of the strength of the pieces being doubtful, but these have all been completed, and therefore nothing further will be started at the moment in this direction.
