COVENTRY.

Dear Wilks,

Many thanks for your letter of the 30th March.

D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} Bastow and A.{Mr Adams} Mitchell have both been in our Design Dept. for some little time.

Bastow has been concerned mainly with suspension, Mitchell with engine design. Bastow is probably the better of the two. He recently read a paper before the I.A.E. which gives a fair indication of his capacity.

As you know, we are not exactly bankrupt at Rolls-Royce Ltd. at the present time, and, therefore, it is improbable that we should let anyone of exceptional merit leave us for want of an increase in salary.

We shall be quite sorry to part with either Bastow or Mitchell, but they put a higher value on their own ability than we do. Part of the trouble may be that they want a change so that they can get more experience, as they are both reasonably young.

I would like to come over to Coventry and see how you are getting on, soon after Easter if this can be arranged, and I can probably give you a better idea of the capacity of these two men by talking to you. Would Wednesday, April 19th, be convenient ?

Yours sincerely,
