S/W. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X832 CWB4/GM/13-4-26. Suspension and Tyres of R.{Sir Henry Royce} R.{Sir Henry Royce} Cars. You will have received a copy of R1/M31326 on the above question. The general matters therein will be dealt with in other ways, but there is one small matter of detail which is very interesting to me, and that is the reference in the latter half of paragraph 16, to the possible use of springs with a stiffer centre (i.e. flexible at the ends.) You may remember sometime ago we tested a proprietary shock absorber called the "S & S" shock absorber which takes the form of a special shackle used with the ordinary springs, but which had the result of increasing the bending moment on the first few inches of the spring. This device unquestionably improved the riding conditions under the circumstances in which we find our own so bad at present, and it might well be worth while to obtain a set of these fittings for one of our cars in order to try the results. In case you did not receive copies of the correspondence which passed on this matter at the time I enclose copies herewith together with some literature on the matter. CWB.
