1209 To EJJ. from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.7/AP.11.12.36. We shall shortly be running a Ph.III. engine on the test bed, using pressure cooling (maximum pressure likely to be used is 10 lbs/sq.in.) In order to do this we cannot use the bed cooling system which is open to the atmosphere. In order to cool the engine, therefore, and also accurately determine the heat given to the cooling water, we wish to use two Phantom III. radiator matrix units, which we will hand to you, immersed in a cold water tank as shewn on the attached sketch Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}279. Will you therefore have two radiators rigged up in a tank as shewn and the necessary water connections made - the system of connection is also shewn on the sketch. We are going to carry out a test to ensure that the piping from the overhead tank to the test bed will supply sufficient water for our purposes. If it does not, this pipe line will have to be enlarged. We require this apparatus as soon as possible, in order to avoid holding up tests on the Continental Ph.III. engine.
