there is no reason to anticipate excessive pressures at any temperature down to this value.

NOTE RE "BUILDING UP" EFFECT.

The "building up" effect referred to in Inv. 33.LA. {L. A. Archer} 1. was noticeable on this occasion, and was dealt with in the usual way as there described.

At the temperature range of about 10-15° C however, there was a variation in the phenomenon. On all previous occasions it was found that, although the pressure on the return stroke might build up to a high value, the pressure on the working stroke was affected only to a very small extent.

During tests taken both on the 10th and 16th February, it was noticed however that the "building up" affected the top line of the indicator card, the maximum pressure on the working stroke being increased by as much as 100 lbs/sq.in. On cards 158 and 159 the lines showing this building up have been dotted in so the effect of the process can be seen.

The effect did not occur at temperatures above or below this range, and a satisfactory explanation has not been found. As however the effect can only occur when the indicator is coupled up to the working chamber, it is not considered necessary to investigate it any further at the present time.
