On ROAD and TRACK
by Grande Vitesse

The lie of the ground forms a wonderful natural grandstand overlooking the start of the Comminges Grand Prix, held on the St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} Gaudens circuit recently. In the foreground is the winner, Comotti (Alfa-Romeo), closely followed by Wimille (Bugatti) and Etancelin (Maserati).

cesses with a crushing victory at Monza. This will be the last big International Grand Prix of the year, as the Spanish Grand Prix will not take place. Here is the score so far: French Grand Prix, won by Italy (Ferrari); German Grand Prix, won by Germany (Auto-Union); Belgian Grand Prix, won by France (Bugatti)—no German cars started; Swiss Grand Prix, won by Germany (Auto-Union).
It is doubtful whether Bugattis will run, but as things stand, I have an idea the race will bring 100,000 Italians shouting to their feet....

500-Mile Race Entries
I PUBLISH on this page a list of entries for the B.R.D.C. 500-Mile Race as they stood up to August 20. You will notice among the "Not classified entries" mention of Whitney Straight and a Duesenberg. I believe this is the car that Peter de Paolo raced at Tripoli and, if so, should be of additional interest in that it will be the first time that an Indianapolis-type car has raced in this country.

NEXT SUNDAY AT MONZA
The Italian Grand Prix on a New Circuit

THE Italian Grand Prix is due to be run off at Monza, near Milan, on Sunday next, September 9, on a brand-new four-kilometre circuit which has been made by constructing new roads, joining up portions of the existing road course, and utilizing one banking of the oval, rather after the manner of the Montlhéry road course.

It will be remembered that last year the Monza meeting resulted in a terrible catastrophe, when Campari, Borzacchini and Count Czaykowski were all killed. At once there was an outcry that the track was dangerous, and it was decided to run no more races on the circuit as it stood.

After a commission of the R.A.C.I. had carefully investigated the details and inspected the circuit, it was decided to build a new course for the Grand Prix, with unbanked corners and of a normal width. The old circuit was wide, and slightly banked on dangerous 130-m.p.h. bends.

Italy v.{VIENNA} Germany Again
At the moment of writing the entry list is not complete, and it is expected that a team of Auto-Unions will start, one being driven by Von Stuck. The Ferrari Alfa-Romeos are to be driven by Chiron, Varzi and Count Trossi, together with another driver to take the place of the late Guy Moll.

The choice would appear to lie between Marcel Lehoux and Pietro Ghersi, with odds in favour of the latter.

Maseratis will be driven by Nuvolari (who will have the new model, if ready), Straight and Zehender; the late H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} C. Hamilton had also been entered to drive Straight's second Maserati. The Mercedes drivers are Caracciola, Fagioli and Manfred von Brauchitsch—so there is already sufficient material to provide a magnificent race.

Ferrari will go all out to recover the ground lost at Berne and in the Coppa Acerbo. The Germans will make every effort to follow up their recent suc-

Sir Malcolm Campbell ("X"), Whitney Straight (Duesenberg), E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} K.{Mr Kilner} Rayson ("X").

The Barnato Hassan Special has undergone its preliminary trials with complete success and the only snag at its first appearance on the track was a leak in the radiator, which was soon cured. Having regard to the b.h.p. developed by the 6½-litre Bentley engine and the weight of the car (28 cwt.) this machine should give John Cobb's huge Napier a run for its money.
