X.3418 - RE BALL END FOR STEERING ON 1000 - 40/50 HP CHASSIS Mr. Royce has written you regarding a number of improvements he wants on the front axle and steering. In connection with this we send a drawing (Lec.L036) which is to be looked at in reference to Lec.537, and shews how Mr. Royce would like the ball end shank and the ball end of the levers improved for the above chassis if possible. We think you understand that these balls are to be made in such a way as to ensure that the ball surface only is hardened, that is to day, material to be left on the shank sufficient for turning away the carbonising before hardening. There is also left on the top of the ball, a spigot which is finally broken off for investigating the condition of the core. The stem and taper shank should be tested for softness.
