X.3481. 16th April 1919. RE "BUICK" CAR. We have fitted a small 40/50 type of R.R.Carburetter with small throats to the "Buick" car. It has made tremendous improvement in running of the engine. It is now remarkably good for flexibility. It is possible to run evenly on top gear at 3 1/2 miles per hour. The engine running light will throttle down to 200 revs.per.min. From the results we have obtained from this car, which has inlet and exhaust valves in the crown of the cylinder and no pockets, there is not much doubt that we shall be able to obtain very good flexibility on our 20 H.P. With the R.R.Carburetterthe petrol consumption is 20 miles to the gallon. We hope that we shall be able to improve upon this. When we are satisfied with the Carburetter and have reduced the tendency for over-boiling on this car, we should like Mr Royce to have it. Although it has not the type of clutch we desire, in other respects it is an excellent example of a small 6-cylinder car and gives one a very good idea of what we might expect from our own: The comparitive features with our 20 H.P.are:- 1. Size of engine. 2. Shape of combustion chamber. 3. Position of plug. 4. Induction pipe. 5. Carburetter. Contd- | ||
