Re: Springing - Phantom 11 and 20/25-HP.

Referring to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}5/MJ.25.6.31., whilst the suggestion made by Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} as to the nature of the instructions passed to the Works regarding the springing for each Chassis is admirable in theory, it is almost impracticable. Most of our business is done through Agents because the customers are in all parts of the Country and it is impossible to let them try Cars with a different springing until they are satisfied and select one of the samples placed before them. Also, we have to ask them already an almost embarrassing number of questions as to the kind of work they wish to put our Cars to when they get them, and we could not very well trouble them any further with questions regarding their use of our Cars.

I think I am correct in saying that we have very little trouble in respect of springing on the 20/25-HP. and that we regard the Ferrell case as an exception, due largely to a misunderstanding of the term "low rating". My feeling is that our standard springing has, in most cases, been very satisfactory and that we can regard the low rating springs as a means of satisfying those who are not satisfied with our standard suspension.

The same remarks apply, I think, to the 40/50-HP., and we shall continue to exercise our best efforts in order to ascertain from the customer such information as will enable the Works to put on to the chassis in question the best type of spring for each individual case. I very much doubt whether we shall ever require low rating springs on the 40/50-HP., such as fitted on Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s Car at present. My impression is that the 40/50-HP, being a fast Car, will on most occasions be driven at speeds in excess of those for which the low rating springs appear to be suitable.
