Whenever the front shock absorber load is reduced, the steering of the car should be tested at high speeds with 30 lbs. front tyre pressures to ensure there is no tendency for high speed wobble to be set up.

[Handwritten] The 30th car in

On Phantom II cars prior to 'K' series, the adjusting washer fitted under the valve cap is thinner than indicated on the attached print.

It is probable, therefore, that should it be desired to raise the ball end load to 100 lbs. there will be insufficient adjustment available.

In such cases valve caps Front F.81399/400 and rear F.81387 should be fitted, and springs F.80982/1.

We recommend that loads of 100 lbs. up and down should not be exceeded as otherwise the working parts of the damper are likely to be overstressed.

One other point is that if the damping load on the rear shock absorbers is reduced, in our experience the best results in getting a good low speed ride will be obtained by also reducing the load on the front shock absorber.

Arrangements are being made to produce a special spanner to remove the high pressure valve caps on the rear dampers.

We are also producing special testing arms to facilitate checking the loading of the front dampers.

Depots should let us know their requirements of these levers and spanners as soon as possible.

We also attach hereto a sectional drawing of the front damper as this has been entirely redesigned.

[Handwritten] Particular care should be taken when adjusting the loads that the high & low pressure valves do not get interchanged. [Handwritten above 'valves'] Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} Valve caps?
