X.8740. DISTRIBUTION BOX - CUTOUT CONTACT POINTS.

On the cutout it is intended that there should be a rubbing action at the points after making and before breaking, but if, in position on the car, the axis of the cylindrical surface of the moving contact point is lower than that of the fixed contact point, this rubbing action cannot take place correctly.
This point arises because we have had a case of sticking contact points and upon examination it was found that the contact points did not meet together correctly, but in such a manner as to prevent the rubbing action taking place. Perhaps Mr. Brock would watch this point on present production boxes.
We are, however, not now satisfied that even if correctly adjusted the cutout works quite as intended, and we are looking into the matter with a view to suggesting an experimental modification by which a correct rubbing action is secured. In any case the possibility of rubbing action is partly defeated by the fact that the stump containing the fixed contact is not rigid enough laterally and allows the fixed contact actually to move to accommodate without sliding what is intended to be the sliding motion of the other contact.
