COPY OF LETTER FROM Sir Banister Fletcher. 31.5.35

"I am very much exercised with the amount of petrol consumption of the new car which I have just bought. I find that including town and country work I am only getting 10 miles to the gallon. On the long runs we find that it is between <s>12 and 13 miles.</s> X

In my last car we used to get 14 miles to the gallon on the years run so that you will see we are up no less than about 33 1/3 % which will be a very serious matter for the year.

I should like to have your advice and opinion on this matter as when I purchased the car I was given to understand that, with the new carburettor a saving would be effected and not an increase of petrol.

5.6.35

I have just been into the question of the petrol consumption of my car. I find that during the last month the car ran 1368 miles and used 131 gallons of petrol, including town work and country runs, so that you will see it gives me only 10 miles to the gallon, which means we are probably doing only 8 miles to the gallon in town.

You will realise that this is a very serious matter and I suppose other users of your new car are finding the same trouble. It seems to me that it is a most wasteful engine and I await a statement from you as to how you are going to check this serious consumption of petrol.
