LIGHT 2 CYCLE COMP. IGNITION
ENGINES FOR AVRO & OTHER WORK.

K433.

We must try to secure somewhat to ourselves (HR.) this type of engine in a light form, probably in the single sleeve valve form.

If by spending our own money we can get any patents of value on this type they might be very useful.

It is here suggested that we risk some money and make at Derby a single cylinder unit, asking Mr. Ricardo's help for the cylinder unit.

I have carefully examined Col. Fell's scheme of engine, but do not think we are likely to succeed on these lines.

The troubles met by Mr. Ricardo do not seem insurmountable, and otherwise the engine promises to build up well for weight and convenient shape.

It would justify some special lubricating oil with a solvent for the gumming trouble which seems to occur in the best of the compression ignition engines, and is not confined only to the sleeve type.

It is such a wonderful advantage to get less exacting requirements with the injection pump and jets, with equally good efficiency.

SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} and H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} agree to proceed with another single cylinder unit of our own, and will send Derby instructions providing HG. and E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} agree that our unit is suitable, and Col. Fell will examine and approve the cylinder scheme when the design is ready.

We shall be pleased with any suggested alternative to Mr. Ricardo's single sleeve scheme by HG. and F.{Mr Friese}
