Report comparing the performance of underfed slotted, weir, and standard pipes.

The underfed slotted type pipe was not so good as the weir type and the power output was lower over the whole range.

Appended are curves shewing the power output with the weir, standard and slotted pipes. It will be seen that the induction pipe depression with the slotted pipe is high indicating restriction at the slot. We find the area of the slot is 24% less than the area of the throttle and hot spot pipe, whereas the area of the slot in the weir pipe is 59% greater than the throttle area.

We are unable to make the underfed slot longer because it would make the removal of the two centre sparking plugs difficult.

The weir type pipe is being tested out on a chassis with the object of determining if the cold distribution is sufficiently good to permit the use of hot water heating instead of the exhaust hot spot with its troublesome butterfly valve. Test results should be available shortly and a report will be furnished.

In conclusion we may say the result of the experimental work shews that the weir pipe is better than both the slotted and standard pipes. The object at present is to produce a built up or two-piece weir pipe - to enable the interior passages to be more accurately produced - which will give the same good results as obtained with the one-piece weir pipe.
