Phantom III Rear Axle Oil Level. With reference to the oil level in the Phantom III rear axle, this was arranged in accordance with our usual standard to come level with the top of the teeth on the crown bevel. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} finds that this level amounts to 1½ pts oil in the axle, and when the axle is in operation practically all of this oil is in suspension leaving nothing for the crown bevel to dip in. Experiments show that 2 pts provides the best compromise and the 15,000 mile test was run on this quantity. Any more than 2 pts tends to raise axle temperature by oil churning. We should, therefore, be glad if you could arrange to raise the level plug boss on the Phantom III axle casings to the 2 pint level for the 25-30 chassis, and for Phantom III production. If any axle casings have been already cast on the latter we may be able to use a standpipe in the level plug hole to get the extra half pint. We are looking into this point and will let you know. In the meantime this modification does necessitate a pattern alteration. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} will supply the increased height required for adding the half pint lubricant. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
