P.11 1st GEAR.

Tests on the synchromesh gear box have shown that 1st gear works further into mesh under load.

Although this also occurs on the standard gearbox it is more pronounced on the synchromesh box. The gear moves beyond the position allowed by the gear gate due to twisting of the select-or shaft on top of the box.

The splines under the 1st gear pinion are un-balanced projecting about .150 beyond the gear teeth. We therefore machined off this portion and found that the gear now came out of mesh.

We shall therefore remove a small amount of the splines the other end so that their length is exactly that of the teeth. Meanwhile A is arranging that the gear shall, if it works in, come up against the roller race and thence transmit the thrust through the sideshaft to the thrust race at the front of the box.
