To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} RG.{Mr Rowledge} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to BJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} X. 8840 R6/M4.5.26. EXCESS WEIGHT. As regards castings and forgings etc. we think it is absolutely necessary for every casting to be cut up and inspected, to see whether it is to the drawing dimensions. This should be done before passing a casting for machining, even the first of an experimental set, because of the weight and the passages, and the fact that it is no use testing a heavy casting that is going to be altered afterwards. When it is found correct to the design the weight should be recorded, and with a working limit no casting etc. should be accepted except within the limit of weight, in the same way as within the limit of dimensions. Will BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} consult with Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} and organise a system of inspection of all parts to the weight limits, especially castings and drop forgings as part of our system, and have all drawings marked to the weight limit.
