702 To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from Ev{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}/DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions} Copy to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH. Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} Ev{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}/DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}1/ET.4.4.41. REAR AXLE - MYTH. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/ET.18.3.41 asks for instructions to be given to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH. so that he in turn can instruct HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} to produce the rear axle for the first Myth car. This axle is substantially as the Salisbury drawings HA-001-2, HA-001-5 and HA-001-6, modified by our PL.372 as regards track and spring and brake equaliser brackets. Spring brackets are shown in PL.370, brake equaliser bracket in PL.439. We have now received from the axle manufacturers their details HA-005-2 Axle Shaft, HA-003-3 and HA-004-3 Axle Tubes R.{Sir Henry Royce} & L.H., and from these Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH. can produce new details to suit our modified track. The procedure to be followed would appear to be this:- The axle to HA-001-5 is to be obtained from the Salisbury Axle Co. Ltd. Spring brackets, brake equaliser bracket, axle tubes and shafts are to be produced by HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} and the spring and brake equaliser brackets assembled to the tubes. The axle is dismantled, roughly in this order:- Removal of axle shafts, removal of centre casing rear cover, bearing caps, differential assembly complete with crown-wheel and bearings, pinion and pinion bearings. Old axle tubes are cut off just outside the axle casing, the ends of the axle casing are bored out to remove the ends of the old tubes. New tubes are fitted and secured. Axle is built up again. If desired it should be possible for Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH. to build up from the Salisbury Axle drawings a complete LOP. of the axle we require. Salisbury Drawings HA-001-2 - HA-001-5 - HA-001-6 - HA.001-9 - HA.00502 HA-003-3 & HA-003-4 are attached to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH's copy of this memo. | ||
