To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From BJ. c. to R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} PN.{Mr Northey} X4299 BJ13/H20.7.22 COMPLAINTS OF VIBRATIONS ON 40/50 CHASSIS, Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/LG19.7.22. X.634 X.790 X.4299 I was interested to read your report to R.{Sir Henry Royce} 107-MG. PN.{Mr Northey} had the carburetter adjusted. I am not sure where this was done, as PN.{Mr Northey} is on his holidays. After this adjustment and the decarbonising, etc. PN.{Mr Northey} and I agreed that the car was running sufficiently smoothly to be a reasonably good example of a high compression car, and could be used for demonstrating provided the hum in the engine could be overcome. I am sorry if Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} still considers the vibration unsatisfactory. I will ask PN.{Mr Northey} to explain what adjustment was made to the carburetter. I am interested to see that you do not consider either 107-MG or 20-UG can be described as silky running cars. This is also our deeling, and we had formed the opinion that unless some other definite cause could be found, this might be improved by lowering the compression. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints}, Br and I are trying 107-MG with medium compression tonight. I am glad to see that you agree that the cars will be better on the average with the lower compression. Closed cars. I am not quite clear why you suggest that - "We shall have complaints with the closed cars" as I understand the latest arrangement is that closed cars will continue to have medium compression, which is the compression you have been giving them previously, and therefore there should be no alteration as regards closed cars. Belts. As belts are one of the causes of vibration, what course do you consider we should pursue to overcome this. (a) Should we now supply belts which will not cause vibration? (b) Is it desirable to remove belts which have been supplied and which are likely to cause vibration, and substitute another type of belt? Should this be referred to R? Satisfactory 40/50 cars. We hope that when we have had an opportunity of testing some cars with medium compression and 14-tooth axles, we shall be able to submit to you a car which appears to us to be silky, silent and satisfactory. 14-tooth axles. We look forward to hearing the results of the tests made at Brooklands, which we hope will enable us to contd:- | ||
