Report comparing the performance and durability of different electrical cable types including Cloverite, Maconit and Helsby.

| EFC4/ADS.12.29 contd. -6- cables were tested and in the case of the former make, one sample broke down after 1/2 min. at 19,300 volts R.M.S. and the other after 2 mins. at the same voltage, whilst both the Maconit samples successfully withstood 19,300 volts R.M.S. for 15 mins. An additional test was made on samples of standard Maconit cable which had done a 10,000 mile test on chassis 22-EX in France. These samples successfully withstood 19,800 volts R.M.S. for 5 mins. after 72 hrs. immersion in water. The conclusion resulting from these tests are summed up in continuation of report WD.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}92 as follows :- "These tests shew that although Cloverite gives a good electrical performance when new, it rapidly deteriorates under service conditions and would require replacing after about 10,000 miles. The present standard Maconit cable not only gives a good performance new, but maintains its initial quality over a long period of running and these tests shew the Maconit to be definitely superior in the majority of the items in the test specification. The Helsby cable is not as good dielectrically as the other three makes of cable or as regards heat and atmospheric resistivity in the case of Maconit and Super Clover.
