I did not see a blank quenched but from a few minutes observation I judged as follows:-

The gear blank is placed on the stand for quenching. The Jaws (before mentioned) protruding through the bore. Down comes the ram which gives pressure on to the flat face and top angle, and the taper spigot attached to the ram presses on to the taper bore of the jaws pressing same to the sides of the bore of the gear blank. The attempt is to keep the blanks as near as possible in their "Turned state" whilst being quenched.

The stand has a resistance of from 3 to 4 tons. The ram comes down and directly the above resistance is overcome the whole lot goes down into the oil.

I hung about till Mr. Straker had gone, then I had a chat with the Manager re delivery of the Gears. They are now busy with the detail necessary for Gear Cutting and hardening which they expect to complete about the 18th. inst. They have sent to the Gleason Coy. for particulars of the six pairs of gears which the Gleason Co. cut for us, as they want to reproduce them if possible. (Incidentally they mentioned that it takes a good mathematician about two days to work out the particulars for Gear Cutting for any particular gears).

All being in order they expect to deliver the 10 pairs about Dec. 23rd. I then put the question of delivery if the 10 pairs were satisfactory, and they could not promise before February and that was if the new machines arrived (they have been advised that the machines are now on the way). I kept the discussion up and finally got as follows -

They believe that Crossleys and Sunbeam (for whom they were cutting gears) were putting the Gears in stock, as they were held up for other details owing to the moulders strike. If so, they would attempt to give you 20 pairs each week in January if the 10 pairs were satisfactory.
