Robert Bosch - Stuttgart.

On June 10th we visited the Bosch plant at Stuttgart. We were firstly shewn the Diesel engine fuel injection pump section which is housed in a large building separate from the main factory. There is some very fine and accurate work done here and most of the machines are uptodate, having their own individual electric motor drive - the older machines will shortly be replaced by new types. They turn out a large number of injection pumps, but there is no attempt to do it on mass production lines; they say that the work is too accurate to be done in this way.

After assembly the injection pumps are very carefully tested for quantity of fuel delivery at specified speeds in test machines specially designed for the job.

We were next shewn the manufacture and erection of sparking plugs, dynamos, self starters, head lamps, side lamps and other electrical equipment. All this work is fully tooled up for mass production, and one was impressed by the general efficiency and the high class of the work turned out. The larger proportion of the plugs being turned out had the latest Corundite insulators. We asked if it was possible to see the production of this material but were politely refused admission to the department where it is made.
