We propose to make the casting so that it is suitable for either method of plugging as shewn by the sketches. At the same time this form of boss deletes external moulding features which may be advantageous in the foundry. A limitation on the use of these expanded discs is as to whether the casting is stiff and strong enough in all cases to withstand the blows of the flattening punch and the tension set up by the disc itself in the boss. (4) INSPECTION HOLES ON ENDS OF HEAD. We have hitherto always provided inspection holes through which the narrow passage along the side of the water jacket could be inspected from end to end. Owing to changes in design to simplify the cyl. block this passage no longer exists so we are washing out the end plugs and providing facilities for cleaning and inspection of the water space by the arrangement of water holes in the floor of the head connecting to cy. block.
