Will Mr. Stent kindly do as he suggests - i.e. include in the next modifications the serrated coupling preferred and tested by Mr. Olley. We had many times thought of this pattern but feared it would not last without slack for long. This pattern however has done better than we anticipated, and as it is simpler it should be tested out by us also, and if good should be adopted.

Some improvement to the Springfield details may be found possible, and every care should be used that the teeth surfaces are really hard. RG.{Mr Rowledge} tells us it is only possible with low nickel C.H.N.S. - i.e. 2% or less, or other non-nickel case hardening steel. Will BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and HL. confirm this?

It will be realised that if the serrated coupling is better, lighter, and less expensive, we should use it, but if not good for the position neither Springfield or Derby should use it.

Mr. Olley will see that we have made several improvements in the Phantom clutch, and lightened the whole since the early ones.

AJS. will send me his rough sketches of what is to be included. I will carefully examine the Springfield drawing, and write again.

R.{Sir Henry Royce}
