(2)

(a) Lengthening of teeth (for tooth strength).
(b) More than halving the bending moment on sun shaft due to overhang of chain wheel (for shaft strength.)
(c) Considering that better material and finish should be available than when the existing gear was designed.

We have asked for a Hyatt bearing, standard in all but length, on one end of sun shaft. This practice was adopted on Goshawk 2 & 3 gearbox spigot bearings. If it is difficult to obtain we could use two rows of Hoffmann rollers or one row of a longer roller (considering small amount of work done) in a cage which would prevent the rollers falling inward. Once imprisoned in the epicyclic cage unit the rollers could not drop out even with the removal of the sun shaft.

The chain has to deal with a 30% greater load than hitherto. The chain line has been maintained as at present.

We suggest that the gear and coupling be tested to see what margin of safety we have over the working load.
