The failure of the Bensport differential, proposing two alternative schemes for improvement.

Referring to the failure of the Bensport differential we send herewith N. schs. 3728/29. N. sch. 3728. shews the D.P. of the differential wheels increased from 8 to 7 using the existing differential cage. As shewn on the attached table of comparative stresses, the stress is then slightly below Peregrine and considerably lower than now. It is probable that this improvement would be sufficient. In view of the element of doubt we have made N. scheme 3729. shewing differential wheels of the standard 14/18 ratio, 7 D.P. In this case the stress is about the same as in the crown wheel, lower than in P. 2. differential, and approximates to that in the 25HP. differential, and there is no doubt the gear would be strong enough, but a new differential cage and star piece is called for. Since N. sch. 3728. is easy to try, it may be thought advisable to test this, before going on to N. sch. 3729. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
