We have carried out a series of tests in order to determine a value for various makes and types of sparking plugs, of their capacity for withstanding oil and sooting up. The following method of testing was followed :- The present standard Lodge non-detachable plug was chosen as a basis for comparison with other plugs; we call this therefore a 100% plug in respect of overoiling. 3 Lodge standard plugs were therefore put in an engine, sey in 1, 2 and 3 battery positions and 3 of another type in 4, 5 and 6 battery positions. The plugs were tested in battery positions owing to the fact that these plugs oil up quickest, being nearest the inlet valve and consequently cooler than the magneto plugs, which are nearest to the exhaust valve. The car was then run on the road and oil was admitted into the induction pipe. In order to produce an oily carbon deposit on the plugs, the car was run on a very strong mixture (obtained by opening the starter carb. valve slightly). The car was run under these conditions at betwen 10 and 20 m.p.h. until the plugs under test failed completely. By this means we were able to get an anti-oiling up value for any type of plug as compared with the present standard Lodge 'C' type non-detachable plug.
