RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} X5060 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson}14/KT.3.3.33. SILENT TAPPETS ON J.III. As you know, we have been struggling with these tappets for about two months. Originally the eccentrics were made in cast iron but they fractured. The material was then changed to steel which overcame the breaking difficulty, but we find that there is a tendency for them to seize up even when run against a hardened shaft. We should therefore like you to produce a set in milinite to see if this will have sufficient mechanical strength. We have asked Steadman to go over the difficulties with you personally, because it appears that in order to function satisfactorily they have to be a perfectly machined job, and it would appear of interest to see if the next set made will eliminate the faults so far experienced. We want to use these silent tappets on the P.II, and should therefore like to clear up these difficulties. We shall require a second set for the J.III unit.
