I am not quite satisfied with the stopping of the clutch on the car I have here. It does not appear to stop at all unless it is pressed well down, which is a long reach for the foot. It may be that it is not quite right, and that others are less troublesome. At the same time an improved scheme has occurred to me, so that in picking up we should use the same surface as in driving, and the wearwill not affect the relative action of the two conditions so that if it is still found necessary to use the pads I propose the following scheme:-

You will remember that at present the back ferodo is riveted on to a loose plate. In the scheme I propose this plate will be sprung towards the moving plate by a suitable number of spring plungers behind it. These will be capable of pushing it away from the flywheel with some selected pressure, and it will be retained by limiting their action, or by a ring carried by the flywheel proper. You will see by this scheme there will be no difference in the surfaces used for one purpose, and the other - i.e. the whole working surfaces, and moreover the clutch brake can be made to operate earlier, or run with greater clearance.

This modification can be so easily applied that it would have little or no effect on production. Mr. Stent is sending instructions
