X. FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} C. to ed.{J. L. Edwards} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} [Struck through] C. to SY. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} SECRET. ORIGINAL [Stamp] DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/N12.2.31. +5310. JAPAN 3. GEARBOX. Herewith we send print of N. sch. 3222., shewing certain parts of the gearbox revised in accordance with R1/M3.2.31. Two alternatives are shewn of the proposal to mount the reverse wheel on serrations. In the one case the serrations are partly turned off the shaft to allow a collar for the wheel serrations to pull up against. In the second case the serrations run out into the bearing which is shortened, thereby increasing the overhang. The nut holding the sleeve under the 3rd. speed driven wheel has been brought further out from the Maybach jaws to make it accessible, and advantage taken of this to extend the bush forward as it seems to be still well supported. Some of the .375 lengthening of the box is due to the washer provided to give the centre bearing on the 2nd. motion shaft a square collar to pull up against. (Original N. sch. attached to BY's copy.)
