In the case of certain heavy duty studs for cylinders and main bearings, shouldered studs have been found essential to prevent bursting of bosses etc., but due to the expense it is not recommended that they be adopted more generally than at present, and they should only be introduced on future design where found essential due to peculiar conditions. Summing up, it is thought that our present methods of retaining studs give satisfaction in service with the maximum manufacturing economy and we therefore recommend that the existing practice of retaining studs wherever possible by tightening up on the last thread be continued.
