Referring to M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} scheme 747, would you kindly note Mr. Royce's remarks as follows:- (1) The connecting rod should be made with a simple ball joint at each end, since both ends of the rod are readily accessible. The ball joint should be of the type instructed for the 40/50 h.p. in memo E/Y/3/21 (2) The ball ends should be .625" diameter. (3) The construction of the shock absorber itself should be made cheaper by using three sheet metal pressings instead of the three drop forgings, for the one moving and the two stationary members of the mechanism, as illustrated in sketch below - It is intended that the clamping bolt shall be secured and prevented from turning by the die-cast aluminium base. (4) The ball end of the shock absorber lever should be bolted on to begin with, as shown in the above sketch for item (3), and if it will not remain tight then it should be brazed into the end of the sheet metal lever. (5) The over-hang of the canti-lever ball on the front axle should be reduced, firstly by reducing the clearance shown between the ball joint and the lower flange of the axle, and secondly, by making the normal position of the connecting rod vertical. The ball should be secured to the axle by forming a boss on the front side and machining out the hole in this boss to a taper of 1 in 6, or 1 in 8 - see sketch - (Contd.) | ||
