X 2448 [Struck through] RE PISTON RATTLES. X.3751.

With reference to the enclosed memorandum, R8/G16.3.20, re piston rattles, what cars are fitted with pistons similar to those on the car which Maddocks is driving ?

I suppose we have to face the fact that the pistons in these cars will begin to rattle and to threaten to seize after they have run 5,000 miles ?

What do you suggest should be done as regards those cars having similar pistons which have been issued ?

What do you propose should be done as regards cars having similar pistons which have not been issued ?

What would be the cost of rectifying the latter before they are issued ?

If cars, which have been issued with similar pistons, are going to have this trouble, the reputation of Rolls-Royce is going to be seriously damaged.

I should like you to have an immediate conference on this matter with the leading officials at Derby and let me have your recommendations.

Of course I agree with the recommendations contained in Mr. Royce's memorandum.
