DY.{F R Danby} FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to BJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E2/M16.11.27. ORIGINAL EAC.10. SPORTS PHANTOM. MAIN BEARING CAPS. X8000 X We send herewith LeC. 2486 shewing the above. Compared with the steel caps we are using at present this cap has been increased in depth on the main bearing bolt bosses to strengthen the neck of the forging where the bridge joins the boss. The cap has been otherwise modified to suit the 1" lower joint in the crankchamber. Regarding the amount of draw allowed on this forging the general thicknesses of the webs and flanges, and the size of the fillets and radii generally, we are not certain what practice was followed in fixing up these quantities for the main bearing caps made for the Phantom, which caps passed successfully through a long test. We have no drawings here of these caps, or models; we should therefore be glad if you could send us both, and we will make any modifications to our design we think necessary.
