Front Brake Squeaks.

In answer to memo HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}/MS9.11.29 we have since examined several front axles, and without question on both the trailing and wrapping shoes the bedding was good; such bedding being similar to that which has been acceptable to our Test Dept. for some considerable time.

We appreciate that too heavy a load distorts the brake drum and we have for some long time always disregarded the instruction on the drawing which says that 10 lbs. weight should be applied to the lever, as we have found that not only does it distort the drum but it makes it almost immovable for bedding purposes.

I might say that our bedding has always been carried out with the co-operation of the Test Dept. who have from time to time demonstrated the type of bedding they require.

You do not say what load should be applied to the lever when doing the bedding.

We will endeavour to do a number of axles with lighter load, and I should be glad if you would get in touch with me so that we can arrange for you to examine the axles, which we will bed in accordance with your requirements.

Also, I have heard this morning that the Test Dept. report that the one which has been specially experimentally bedded is still squealing.

I would also like to point out that this squeal has become much more prevalent since the damping device was taken off the drums to cure the grunt which was complained of at that time.
