CHASSIS 3.AZ.52 - Mr. Lionel de ROTHSCHILD
O.P. 3378 - Mileage 9250 miles
---------------------------------

Upon my arrival at Brides-les-Bains: I tested the car in the mountainous district in company with the chauffeur. I observed that the thermometre continually registered 90/95° and that the acceleration and slow running of the engine were not normal, but no misfire was caused by the silent tappet mechanism.

After first road test I carried out the following work:-

1°. Reset the points of the two ignitions.
2°. Synchronised the two ignitions.
3°. Reset the tappet clearances, same had too much clearance.
4°. Examined the silent tappet mechanism for correct funtioning.
5°. Cleaned & reset the 24 sparking plugs, which were found to be quite dry (free from oil).
6°. Removed the front apron and front wings etc., I had great difficulty in removing the 12 steel coachbuilders bolts which had rusted. (Coachbuilders should be made to fit bolts of non-rusting material.) Fitted the new matrix (latest and more efficient type). Re-erected all dismantled parts.
7°. Fitted latest type petrol pump.
8°. Modified the position of the petrol feed pipes from the petrol pump to the carburettor by removing the aluminium petrol filter housing as situated at the rear of the engine and placing same higher up and as far as possible in the air flow from the engine. I made and fitted two special supports for the filter body. By carrying out the above the filter body was no longer in contact with the engine mass.

9°. Re-adjusted the brakes externally.

After carrying out the above, I tested the car at fairly high speeds on 3rd. gear for 30 Kms. On the road which I took the car, the longest straight stretch was only about 1 kilometre. During this test the car behaved quite normally, the thermometre reading varied between 70/80° and the petrol pumps also functioned OK.

After carrying out the above test, I made another test of 150 Kms. in company with the chauffeur, this time I drove the car up the Col de L'Iseran 2700 meters altitude, this particular mountain climb is very winding and the corners are at present being enlarged. The air temperature was 30° in the shade. All went quite well until I had reaced an altitude of
