F2/JL9533. 9th May, 1933. Colonel N. Hudson, D.S.O., The Technical Committee, Mechanical Warfare Board, Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, London, S.E.18. Dear Hudson, EVAPORATIVELY-COOLED PHANTOM 1. ARMOURED CAR. Please find herewith copy of an internal report ref: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Pav.6/KT.12.4.33. I think you will find this interesting. I shall be glad if you will let me have it back when you have finished with it as it is my office copy. I was talking to Rowcroft over the 'phone yesterday afternoon and he told me that the car had performed quite well in the Welsh trials, with the exception that the red lamp indicated when the car was running in convoy. In this connection we recommended the fitting of a larger water pump, but could not include this in the small amount of time we were given to do the job, or at the price which was allowed. The driver would probably have overcome the trouble had he changed down to third when he saw the light come on, thereby increasing the rate of circulation of water and air. From the remarks on page 4, in the first paragraph of the section headed "Tests on Road" of the attached it will be seen that at 17.5 m.p.h. in top gear the engine is only running at 650 r.p.m., and at this speed the water pressure generated by the pump is insufficient to operate the injector. This larger pump would also improve the system in this respect. This increased water pump can be fitted at a later date if you think it is necessary. | ||
