Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c, M/LS. c, Psn. c, EM/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} c, Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Enclosure by 1200 borrowed fah EM.10/DJ.14.2.44. S.M.M.T. POST-WAR STEELS - CONFIDENTIAL. As you may be aware, about the middle of last year I was appointed a member of the S.M.M.T. Materials Committee, and whilst last year one or two meetings were held which were of no particular interest to us, it does now appear that a series of meetings will take place dealing mainly with steels which, in my opinion, is of direct interest. The technical sub-committee of the S.M.M.T. have put in a considerable amount of work in an effort to reduce the number of specifications, I attach hereto copy of their first effort in this direction for your information and future guidance. I do not think that this is a final list, but it should certainly be useful as a guide showing the trend of matters so far as the S.M.M.T. are concerned in their efforts to secure not only cheaper, but better materials.
